Hovering Moth in Tennessee

(Doug) Murfreesboro, TN

Here is a picture of a hovering moth that flies like a hummingbird. It was feeding on my petunias about a month ago (July) and I captured it with my camera. This was in the mid-morning. I could hear the humming wing beat when it was in the air.

Here is an additional picture showing its proboscis and its lobster-like tail. What species is this?

Cibarius, I have never seen a moth like you have taken photos of! They are great photos and I'm anxious to see if any body else has photos to post. Keep up the good work!

This is a clear-winged hummingbird moth, Hemaris thysbe (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/65fz46 for images and more information.

WOW! I have learned something new today, I've never seen 1 of these and hope maybe I will get to see 1 in real life in my lifetime; which I should have maybe 20-30 years left. Only GOD knows since we are all on his waiting list.
