WHAT IS IN FULL COLOR NOW AUG 16-31

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Wow, it is already the second half of August! Still subbing for Rarejem who has to work more days than I do......

Starfire phlox are now joining the lavender phlox and shasta daisies in the "country garden" sections.

The liatris are also joining the phlox. In the back you can see a rebloom on a pink rose I have praised in the past: Savoy Hotel.

The waterlilies are loving the heat. The line you see is part of my heron defenses for my koi.

Yes my calla is small and only one and later than usual.

Ooh, I love the starfire phlox!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Woooo- yeah, that Starfire is glorious. Love it.

Bummer that all the callas wimped out this year- but at least I know it wasn't something I did wrong. Must have been the cold spring.

Village of Port Clem, Canada

I love the Water Lily photo. THanks for sharing.

We have wild yellow water lily here on the Queen Charlotte Islands, B. C. They are a July bloomer.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Very pretty. My phlox is still not blooming altho is growing like crazy. Maybe too much nitrogen in the soil? Altho other things around the phlox are blooming and this is not just one bed we're talking about. I have phlox in several beds and also in pots. Not a bloom in site! Or too much water? I have been very diligent about watering this year.

Pony, where was that plant sale with the dahlia society?

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

I have never been successful in overwintering callas except for the large white ones. I have assumed that they are too tender even for our zone.

Edited to add,

The assumptions for "tender" are the pink and yellow ones or the ones with spotted leaves.

We have them in yards here but I've had little success personally. I currently have some in pots. I put them by the hot tub during winter. I can get away with zone 8 plants next to the hot tub in pots.

But we are supposed to be able to grow callas. One yard in Langley has lovely ones that come back huge every year.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

It' my understanding that the small colored callas aren't hard here, generally, but that the larger white ones are. I do know first hand that my mom had big white Callas growing in Corvallis, Oregon and they came back beautifully year after year.

I've seen lots of nice phlox this year. My neighbor's has been blooming a month (and they use good amounts of manure compost). Mine is doing well.

Gwen, are yours getting enough water? Sun?

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Yeah, I think only the large white callas are able to survive here. My Mom always had them, which is why I grow them now.

Gwen, the sale was in University Place, just a few miles from where I live. It is an annual sale, so I plan on going back next year for sure.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Katie, yes on the water! And enough sun so that nearby roses are blooming.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I leave my callas in the ground all year. It has been at least six years since I planted them. I found another bloom today.

Second bloom on the front yard Cherry parfait. Funny how the coloring is very light on the back yard one. Must need some nutrients.

This canna is blooming nicely now that we had a spell of hot weather.

The cone flowers are great this year and the Sedum is getting ready to bloom next to it.

These glads are not what I ordered, but they are keepers! The ones I ordered were supposed to be purple.

Seed pods are growing from my wisteria. They are pretty cool looking. Anyone know how to harvest the seed?

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Let the pods ripen, they turn black. When they're good and dry, shell them like peas.

Thanks for the scoop Pony. If anyone wants seeds let me know.

This is a NOID clematis that I bought for a couple bucks at the end of the season last year. It was basically a twig with a leaf or two, and I stuck it in the ground next to my old apple tree without much hope. But today we got the first two blooms! Nelly Moser maybe?

This is Knifphofia 'St. Gallen' with some phlox and 'Coronation Gold' yarrow. It's a lovely tangerine color, and it looks like I'm going to get several blooms off it now in its second year.

My red amaranth in the veggie garden is getting big and forming red ropes of seeds. I've planted it with bulbing fennel, dill, and basil for contrasting color.

And this is the bank I cleared of creeping ranunculus earlier in the season. I ended up plopping in lots of little annuals that I grew from seed, and it's filled in nicely. Blooming right now are a lime nicotiana, statice, stock, and some pink oxalis. This is my first time growing nicotiana and I really like it, although I don't notice the pretty smell it is supposed to have.

Belamcanda chinensis 'Hello Yellow' (in front of a black pot). I love how the blooms twist up when they aren't open like they are getting the water wrung out of them.

And Beahive, those glads are so cool. I'd definitely be happy for a mix up like that!

Nice blooms Bea! I like the dark imaging KYM.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Beautiful, Kim.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

I love that amaranth, Kim. I meant to grow some this year, but didn't get around to starting the seeds. (along with the 1000000 others I didn't get to... LOL) Next year!

Bea, I would love to have just a few of those wisteria seeds, please. I have no idea where I can plant it, maybe next to the shed so it grows up the side... hmmm...

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Things are looking good at your place, Kym. Are your veggies in the boulevard again this year?

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Beautiful, Kym

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Gwen, it is hard to imagine what your problem with phlox is. Very strange! I will be mean and post a pic of another one of mine, I don't know which variety but it NEEDS to be moved as it is at least 4 feet tall.

Sharon, I'm just thrilled that at least the foliage on mine is thriving! Next year I will fertilize them with some sort of blooming fertilizer. (Altho I did give them ozmocote this year.)

(Linda)Gig Harbor, WA(Zone 8a)

Beautiful photos Kym and Sharon your phlox are outstanding!
I always look froward to the profusion of flowers on my Albizia julibrissin. This was taken hanging out of my second story window.
