I got only one shot of this little stranger, very shy. It's a bit smaller than a Red Admiral, bigger than a Skipper.

This appears just to be a rather tattered and shopworn red admiral (Vanessa atalanta; Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/2b86bb9 for another example.

Thanks, Suunto. Could of fooled me. The markings look close enough but the colors are as washed out as the wings are worn.
Your ID would make that my first Red Admiral and this my second, shot 2 days later.

The old timer returned to let me get a couple more shots. And I cut-out the young one shot earlier and pasted it on this image. Fascinating.
