Need some advice

Tonto Basin, AZ

I want to significantly thin or eliminate scrub mesquite, cat-claw, bayberries, palo verde, burro brush, desert broom, etc. along our road and in a patch near the house. It will look better and be less of a fire hazard. I cleaned up a small section of it the way I want, but (no surprise) the plants I cut back immediatley began to regenerate.

What herbicide will kill these trees? If it takes them all out, I won't be unhappy & will replant.

Thanks,

Frank

BTW, male mulberry trees make spectacularly good shade trees here. Fast growing, easy to shape, dense shade

Of the plants you mentioned, mesquite is our only major problem. When we first moved to our ranch, we had one 40 acre pasture that was wall to wall mesquite. It has taken us 8 years to clear the pasture of all but a few sprouts. We use a combination of Remedy and Reclaim to get rid of mesquite. It doesn't provide a 100% kill rate especially if the underground node of the mesquite is very large. With large nodes, it may take several years to kill the entire node. The Remedy/Reclaim mixture must be applied when the soil has warmed. For us it means during July and August, maybe early September. The leaves on the mesquite have to be in the dark green stage. If rain encourages new growth, we have to wait until the leaves turn dark green. That's one reason why it takes so long to get rid of the mesquite. If parts of the shrub are not hit by the spray, the corresponding part of the underground node is not killed. The price of Reclaim will make your eyes water.
