I must say it is really a tropical paradise, very nice and lush, thank you for showing it to us.
Thanks Frostweed! I am so thankful that most of the plants came back from the root. The one week of freeze we had devastated just about everything but the daylilies and a few plumerias.
Being able to repurchase the Majesty Palms and Ferns, and then the Good Lord replenishing everything else is such a blessing! I love it so much! Thanks again!
We had a very severe winter too and it is very sad when we lose the plants we treasure.
I love my garden too, so I can identify with your feelings, it is good to see people so excited about their gardens!
Definately. After the freeze I was devastated. Everything was brown. All of the banana trees had to be cut to the ground. The EE, gingers, all of the plants on the side.....gone.......it was horrible. I tried to be strong but finally gave in and cried!
My yard crew came in and spent over three hours hauling dead plants out to the front.
My youngest Granddaughter asked if I was going to replace all of the banana trees, and I said, "No......." It would have cost too much to repurchase them.
Little by little new sprouts started showing up......and now look at them, they are taller than the six ft fence! Praise the Lord! I thank Him all the time for the banana trees. They are so beautiful! I'm relatively easy to please.......doesn't take diamonds or a lot of money.......just make my back yard look like Oahu and I'm delighted! haha!
I even went to the dollar store and bought some artificial orchids for the patio and hut. It adds alot of color and won't die!
My philosophy is "Where there is a will, there is a way!"

That is a very good attitude Jeanne!!!
Thanks Jo! I stuck the artificial ones down in pots of things that had died, so when I water, I just water everything. Mostly wandering jew has came up, but one pot a few hostas came up. My daughter laughed because she thought I thought if I watered the artificial ones, they might take root...........haha! I do believe in miracles......but I explained to her that I had reused the pots, so I was just hopefull whatever was there previously might grow......the begonias did, and the airplane plants did.....plus the water rinses the dust off of the artificial ones!
I laugh when I water them still thinking about her comment!
Hawaii in your own backyard! Heaven!
Yes, and now all I need is the Luau and the hula dancers! I do miss the gorgeous Pali Mountains. If I could just have a mural painted on the fence and get the water fall going.........Then of course we'd need to lower this temp a bit.....doesn't get this hot in Hawaii! haha! But I'm trying........one step at a time! haha!

Beautiful ! Glad you are able to enjoy natures wonders. The planter on your patio is fabulous.
To die for, Jeanne. My elephant ears, bananas and brugs die to the ground every winter. At first I tried protecting them. Now I do nothing at all and they come right back as soon as the ground warms up. Always multiplied and larger than the year before. Such is life in NORTH Texas.
Kat, i saw that you live in Baytown and do tropicals as well. Maybe we could get together, show off each others yards and do some trading!!!! Looks really good, love the patio!
Thanks everyone! I love the planter too, banana18! Christi, I am so glad they came back from the root. WOW! I did lose two majesty palms that were in the ground. How's your sago?
It's such a joy to have. I can see it out the back door and window, from the kitchen so I can enjoy it without even going out there when it's this hot.
We really could use some rain. There is supposed to be either isolated or scattered T storms this week. I sure hope so or I will have to water again.
Brandon send me a Dmail. I'm Texasgal77.

The sago froze and lost all the fronds. I couldn't bring myself to dig it up so it just sat there. Well, lo and behold a couple of weeks ago it put out a new hat. I am so happy. Biggest surprise (you know we had the coldest winter with the most snow in our history) the return of a few coleus. Those are definitely annuals here and I was shocked. Before this heat wave set in, everything was bigger and more lush than before. The heat and extreme suns rays have pretty much fried everything now. Now have 14 bananas where I did have 4.
Wonderful! Most of ours came back except for the hibiscus, and some of the plumerias, and ti leaves.!
I'm going to call it a night.....catch ya later.
Jeanne
Christi, you had COLEUS come back????? My goodness. They aren't supposed to live through even a light freeze. I bring mine in when the temps dip below 55, and don't take them back out until about the same.
It's funny how the cold winter worked. I had a lot of stuff that was very late to come up. But, when it did actually appear, it was bigger and lusher than usual. (Until, like you said, this heat we've had the last couple of weeks.) I lost some wax begonias growing next to my house that had survived the 4 previous winters. They had huge root systems and were pretty well-protected. But... I had a petunia in a completely unprotected hanging basket 4 feet away. Goodness, I can barely keep petunias alive through August. But this one lived through last summer, and last winter, and came back last spring, and it's blooming right now and looks like it will make it through this summer too. Shrug. With spotty weather results like that, how can you tell?
Wow. What a petunia. I don't have good luck with them at all. My begonias are gone that were in the ground, cooked. Two others that I have had for almost 20 years in huge pots. They are loosing their leaves. Coleus I almost always plant in ground and treat like annuals. Nobody could be more surprised than I am.
Well that was a delightful trip to the tropics Texas style!! I have been to Christi's and I don't know how you two manage to keep the tropical feel but it is beautiful Jeanne.
I lost a lot of things but will probably never know what. A new puppy we got this year has pulled and chewed up all of my plant markers! LOL! Now I am beginning to bury them near the plant bases so I may hit one if I tried to plant over it.
I twas definately a strange winter! Part of my Yucca I thought made it just rotted off. Not use if it will put out new growth or not.
Thanks Sheila! Goodluck with your new puppy!
Jeanne
