I have never seen a caterpillar like this before. What kind of butterfly will it turn into? Whats with the spikes?
Caterpillar was found in Toms River, NJ.
Thanks
Vicki

This caterpillar is known as a hickory horned devil, it is the larva of a moth in the family Saturniidae called the regal moth or royal walnut moth (Citheronia regalis) - see http://tinyurl.com/28gn7bn
put it back. It needs dirt to burrow in to make its cocoon. Or put about 6" of loose dirt in a 5 gal bucket and put it in. I hand raised a bunch from eggs. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/560599337wkqWvw pictures start on bottom of page 2 & continue on page 3 to cocooning
