My wife, Marilyn was a waitress for 16 years and there was one night when she worked at HoJo's that she made $3.86 in 6 hours. Needless to say she didn't stay at that job. The hardest job was when she was Head Banquet Waitress. You had to serve 10 people per table and also be responsible for the actions of everyone else. She use to tell me that she had the most enjoyable and also the dreaded nights of her life in that job. Most people think that their gift to the bride and groom should cover the staff that waits on them. I am very picky about dining out. I expect a certain level of service. I know that on busy nights it maybe different then on less busy nights. I tip very well for good service 20-25 % and less for what I call dining nightmares. We had diner a couple of weeks ago at a Olive Garden and our waiter was a young man who you could tell hadn't worked there very long. I asked for a Root beer and was told they didn't have any (Coke products only) so I had a Coke. When he brought back the drinks I took a sip and said, "you were fooling with me, this is a root beer!" He had this funny look on his face and I told him I was just kidding with him. The rest of the meal, which was excellent, was a lot fun. He left a small card with the bill in which he said he really enjoyed waiting on us. I wrote the tip on the bill and on the way out stuck a $20 bill in his shirt pocket and told him, "remember that a meal will only last a little while, but the impression you make can last for ever"
And this concludes today's lesson in DINNING 101

Good story! I worked at the Post Office, delivering every Sat. for 5 years....plus all the vacation time the permanent carrier took....plus after every vacation, because she didn't like dealing with the increased mail...at Christmas time, there were packages galore. I came in one Sunday to deliver pkgs. in a pouring rain thunderstorm....Dec. 19th...I remember because it was my birthday....I looked like I had been swimming with my clothes on....the rain went through the rain jacket! Many customers left gifts, which were never marked with my name, except for 2 customers whose kids I had in school...they left a lovely gift for me every year, & it made me happier than anything else. I try to tip as much as I can afford if the server is competent....only ran into one memorable one in FL who looked at us coming in the door, & said "What do you want?" in a nasty voice....she threw menus & silver on the table, & left in the middle of lunch....she was the manager's mother! This was in a tiny town on the St. John's River...no place else in town to eat!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Horrible, no way I would eat there. - must be 'batty' from all that sun...

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

(The mother) lol!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's funny! Way to go, Ma!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

How would you tip in this situation???

At the restaurant yesterday and my step mil orders a speciality salad that is supposed to have gorgonzola cheese, she takes a bite and tastes blue cheese(she is allergic to blue cheese) so she sends it back. The manager comes out with a bag of the gorgonzola expalining that it is impossible that she tasted blue cheese because they use the cheese from the bag she is holding..... REALLY??? so you don't have blue cheese in the restaurant??? funny hubby and I had it in our salads. So no one could have possibly made a mistake???? Why couldn't she just have said sorry, brought a new salad and made sure it was all gorgonzola??? sheesh

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

my tip would be the customer is always correct.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You're right!!! My step mil is 1/2 Italian you can just imagine what she wanted her tip to be.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Crazy.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

First, tipping. What do you tip for:

Restaurants, diners, etc.? Dinner vs. breakfast, lunch or a snack? 20% for sitdown. Nada for lining up and eating food other people breathed on.
Hotel housekeeping? If I stay more than one night cuz I want to ensure they leave chocolate
Cabs? 10% if just cruising. 20% if they have to muscle my stuff.
Deliveries? Yupp
Mailman (or others) at the holidays? Nope cuz we have psychomailman again.
Barbers/hair stylists? For kids? I have a BIG doo so it's more a bribe than a tip.
Others? Redcaps at airports (except methinks they are no more). Cameraguy, hardwardstore guy, veggieguy and anyother guy who is willing to deal with dahlianut doohickeys and befuddlement.

Gifts (Money):
Weddings? Close relative? Not so close or friend? Money
Birthdays - Presents for seedlings. Money for kidlings. Dinners for biguns
Graduation? HS? College? Reform school? Nope.

Anything I missed?? Host/hostess gifts. Always.

Thomaston, CT

LOL....reform school! Love it!

I just had a haircut and pedicure last week, $10 tip each for $25 service, because the pedicurist has to touch feet all day and gives a good massage, and the hairdresser fits me in whenever I need her.
Dining out, usually 15-20% but I agree with it shouldn't be a bigger tip just because the food costs more, same as a $5 breakfast would get more%.
Gifts are always tough for me, usually cash, but how much I struggle with.

Mailman and paper guy get gift cards for the holiday, I wanted to give cash but DH thought the gift card was nicer.

We met my son's girlfriend's parents on Sunday and all went out to brunch at Belhurst Castle. They picked up the check, and wouldn't let us split it. I'd like to do something as thanks, but what?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

A personally written thank-you note is always appreciated.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Anything to go along with it? We liked them, and talked about golfing together sometime. Lindsey thought it was time for us to meet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Then maybe something golf - related.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lindsey is very sweet so I'm not surprised you liked her family. David and her make a great couple.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, I'm very happy, they are good for each other. I knew I liked her when David ended up in emergency and I was 10 hours away, and she went and spent the night with him, said she couldn't have been anywhere else, and taking care of him was "her job" now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have seen golf gift baskets.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That's a good idea, I'll do that, thanks.

Thomaston, CT

Sounds like a great person, Debi...after many airheads, Garret got a good one!
