Propagating Astilbe

Does anyone have any insights into propagating Astilbe?

Hi - I did some research on the web and it looks like the only consistently mentioned method of propagating Astilbe is by dividing the root ball. Is that consistent with everyone's experiences?

Hi Seran, I divide mine , plus I have some seedling coming up, from seeds that fall on the ground.

I've tried to start seeds but they've never germinated for me. Dividing is definitely the way to go and almost instant gratification.

What time of year do you divide yours?

I've done them in spring and in fall. If in fall, I do it early, so the roots has time to established, before the ground freeze.

We had a cool summer last year so I spent a good deal of time dividing them then. With adequate rain too, they all came back this spring. Glad I didn't do any Astilbe dividing this summer as we're really short of rain for August with unusually hot weather. I did forge ahead and divided a couple of Hostas and they've been getting supplemental watering.
