I found this guy eating away at my pentas. Does anyone know what it is, and is it a beneficial caterpillar?
CLOSED: Large Green Caterpillar
This is a larva of a white-lined sphinx moth, Hyles lineata (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). They feed on a wide variety of plants, and can be pests when they occur in large enough numbers. The adult moths are beautiful - see http://tinyurl.com/2d4vuwq for images and detailed information.
