I found this insect in my yard. It looks like a type of wasp. Was approx. 2 inches long, with what seemed to be a very long stinger. Can anyone help with identifying it?
CLOSED: Strange looking wasp type insect
This is a non-venomous wasp known as a wood wasp or horntail (Hymenoptera: Siricidae); possibly one known as the pigeon tremex (Tremex columba). What appears to be a stinger actually is its egg-laying tool (ovipositor) that it uses to insert its eggs into the wood of dead or dying trees where their larvae develop. Another large wasp in the family Ichneumonidae often lays its eggs in the tunnels made by the wood wasp larvae, its larvae then feed on the developing wood wasps. this wasp is Tremex columba
