Can I plant inter-disburse irises and lilies?

Convoy, OH(Zone 5b)

I am in the process of planning for the renovation of several of my flower beds. I currently have a full-sun bed in which I have planted several irises in one part of the bed and several lilies in another part of the bed. They are currently next to each other. I would like to know if I can plant irises and lilies inter-disbursed in the same area?

Of course you can. My only concern would be that of the lilies wandering underground as they emerge so I'd keep them enough of a distance apart that you won't hurt the bulbs as time goes by and you will have to divide the irises.

You could even add a few dahlias (but you'd have to lift them after a hard frost) to continue to give you color until frost.

It's your garden, you can do whatever you like! My garden is all mixed ~ I have phlox, gaillardia and all sorts of things to fill in for late-season bloom.

Thanks pirl and moby. I think that I will get the irises and lilies seperate divided by coneflowers and alaska shasta dasies. This will be in the back of the bed with asters and chrysanthemums in front.

Good choices. It should look great. Please post photos when they bloom.

I have short lilies and dwarf irises together. They dont bloom at the same time here, just a few weeks apart.
The iris leaves look great with the deadheaded lilies.
This is June 21.Iris have been out for a couple of weeks as they are early variety.
