CLOSED: a cat i've not seen before

this guy was crawling across the driveway this morning...pretty formidable looking!
he's 3.25" long and quite thick.

this photo shows the back end as he's heading away from me.

here is a front shot heading towards me.
he has horns up and down his body but they're not very large considering his overall size.

i'm thinking something Polyphemus but it's a lot darker in color than others i've seen...maybe ready to pupate?

i turned him loose under the cedar trees in my shade garden. what a fascinating cat! wicked looking but harmless.
