Waterton, Alberta camping 2010

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Thank you, Jo! I didn't think anyone would come visit the site yet, as I'm not finished - lots more pictures, and yes, we really enjoyed the spot we had!
Thanks for the help on the flower names ^_^

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Here's a volcanic rock - love this picture!

same rock - another view - would look good in a garden hmmmmmm lol

This is called Prairie Smoke, or Old Man's Whiskers. It was used in the native smoke lodges, but not sure what for.

These flowers look like daisies that have been frilled

Here's a red dragonfly..... don't think I've ever seen a red one before

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Here's a better picture of the dragonfly

dark clouds are gathering again..... time to head back!

This rock looks very brittle, but it's definitely not. It's an interesting perspective of colours.

another perspective of Waterton Springs.... heading back because it's lightly drizzling.

Here's a Charlie Brown tree if ever I saw one lol
The strange shape is caused by the winds. Doesn't it just make you want to take it home and decorate it?

These mosses and lichens are so cushy - feels like the softest of cushions under your feet, about 2-3 inches deep.

This is Kinnikinnick, they're tiny and I like the "thick" green leaves. Almost looks like a succulent.
What an odd name - I'll have to "google" it to see where the name came from!

ah Blue Bells...... they're a lot bluer in real life - don't know why these came out washed out.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Wow - what a rock! If I could lift it..........

such a pretty bunch of flowers and I never seemed to find it anywhere else but this bunch.
It's called Coreopsis (as per Stacey - thank you for the help!).
I'm surprised, with all the travelling we did in the park that I didn't see it anywhere else.....

aaaaaaaah sunset back at our campsite - these mountains are so beautiful this time of evening.....
You can see by the mud tracks made by vehicles how soft the ground was after all the rains.

This is the first time it wasn't raining at this time of night, and it's Thursday - it waited until later to rain

With all the clouds gathering, it looks like it may rain again, but they just came down low to say "Bye!"

Friday, and I'm braving the hill - it's very steep and I climbed it on a whim...... but I did it! It's stony, and not very good footing - not "true" trails. They're mini rock slides that are the only way to climb up. Bob's at our site, taking the picture. I wish I'd taken my camera with me - maybe next time.

can you see the little bird that hopped into our site? With that beak, it looks like it would crack nuts.

Thumbnail by Tallulah_B
TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

This bird has a crest, maybe a bit of orange on it's head, and a yellow spotted breast? Bad lighting, but I'm guessing I'm right......
Any ideas what bird it is?

I think this is a deer mouse - it hops like a kangaroo! cute little fella, but wouldn't take the Brazil nut from Bob's fingers. Wouldn't leave, but didn't want to be touched. Good thing - don't want hantivirus! (sp)

here's another shot of the little mousie.
He sure liked our firepit - it had a very hot fire in it just then.

Thumbnail by Tallulah_B
TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Little mousie hopped, hit the board, and knocked itself silly which is why it stopped hopping long enough for me to take this picture!

Late Friday night, and this is our last fire....... hot, hot, hot!

I don't have pictures of our last morning - it was toooooo tiring. Took 2 1/2 hours to break camp - 10-person tent, all the tarping, and all the packing....... phew!
Maybe next trip we'll have a tent trailer....... just stuff everything in, and unpack later LOL

Hope to have new pictures next trip - Long Weekend in August? hmmmm we'll see!!
Hope you enjoyed the pics as much as we enjoyed the reality ^_^

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Susan looks like a nice relaxing time, and lots to see! Great pics, love all of them! Thanks for sharing your trip!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Susan-the pic with the flower you said had a woody stem is Geranium, the 2nd is Lupine, the 3rd is Bee balm and the yellow one is Coreopsis. Nice pics-looks like you had a great time!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Susan, Canada is so pretty, and I bet being up in those Mountains is very relaxing!
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I went to work today, still feeling the effects of the vacation - I'd go back in a MINUTE!
Now, we're waiting to see if we've been approved for a loan for a tent trailer (we've been sleeping in a tent, and although it's big - 10 person - it's 2 1/2 hours to put up and take down Each Time).
We'll likely find out tomorrow.
I'm still feeling mellow........ ^_^

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Thank you so much for sharing Susan. ^_^

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Love the pic with the volcanic rock surrounded by wildflowers with the mountains in the background.

Sandy

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Oh, I love that pic, too! and seriously...... if I could lift it!!
but, there's likely a lot more to the rock below ground........

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

THe one with small pinkish flowers is Spreading Dogbane, and the small leathery leaves is Kinnikinnick. You should go sometime during the Wildflower Festival...third week in June. Take some of the tours..some are at no charge..and you will see amazing flowers not occuring north of the Oldman R. e.g. Mariposa lily, Bear Grass ( a lily).
Nice pics.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Great photos. I forgot to mention the Canadian Thistle looks more like Bull Thistle. Both Canada and Bull Thistle are on the noxious wee lists, I don't see why the Bull one is as I have never seen anymore than a few in a patch. the Canada thistle is a terrible colonizer, you see huge patches of it even in the city!

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The one that looks like frilled daisies is a fleabane. The Gaillardia (brown eyed susans), Prairie smoke, kinnikinnick and the wild geranium all do well in our gardens too.
