I live in a rural area of South-West France and in a recent spell of hot weather had flying insects that looked like an ant with a long abdomen, black, wing about the same size as its body, which was approx. 2cm long, they seemed to spend the time mating and flew into the house where we could hear an intense buzzing. On investigation we found cocoons, three together, about 2.5cm long, nutmeg coloured, stuck almost as though with superglue, behind bookcases, pictures, in wardrobes, at several locations. On removing them they broke open and a larvae about 7mm long and mahogany in coloured spilled out. Sorry, haven't a picture. Any ideas appreciated?

Of what material were the 'cocoons' constructed? If they appeared to be hardened 'mud,' these insects could be wasps in the family Sphecidae - see http://tinyurl.com/2abvksc for an example (this is not intended as an exact match).
Thanks Suunto, your information coupled with further information on this wasp family seem to fit the bill very closely and I consider the mystery solved. All I have to do now is stop them coming into the house!! Thanks once again.
