This isn't the best photo, sorry. This guy was all black with some iridescent color as well.
CLOSED: Wasp ID
Hello Neefman,
We have those here too...all over our milkweed we have for the Monarchs...
Here's the info you want...
Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphex_pensylvanicus
http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2009/08/18/blue-mud-wasp-or-cricket-wasp/
We have them here in Michigan too and they love the flowers on my catmint.
Thank you both. :)
The ones I see are all black with an almost blueish cast to them.
Does anyone know what this bug is? I think it just showed up this year, or maybe I've just noticed it. I see it sometimes in the soil, on its back or side, slowly waving its arms (for lack of knowing what the appendages are called) around. This one was sitting on a leaf of one of my brunneras. Its not aggressive . . . in fact, it seems very slow. In the spring, I saw one as I was digging slowly waving its arms as other bugs sort of swarmed around it. Very weird!
Oops - I'm sorry! I meant to post this on the forum, not in a thread!
