At my window sat a moth with red glowing eyes, looking into the light of the room. I have seen this only once - could the light trigger the glow?
Red glowing eyes
I guess it could but cicadas have red eyes and that is in broad daylight.
Usually, I would suspect light reflection/refraction in most instances as you describe, but I have seen a few moth images where the presence of pigment(s) could not be ruled out - see http://tinyurl.com/23hzyfq and http://tinyurl.com/2g9l4uw for examples.
