......just ONCE I'd like to interview for a really great job and actually GET the darned thing.
Why does it seem to be so easy for some people, and the rest of us have to claw our way up the side of a cliff?
You know, just once.............
Don't feel too bad. My hubby has been permanently laid off three times in ten years, the first time was the day after we signed on our house. His resume is posted in several places and he submits for jobs he is definately qualified for. He is always over qualified (wants to much money LOL) or doesn't have enough degrees. You would think many years of experience would count for something. He had to contract for a while to finally get hired full time permanent. We are settled for now, but he is actually making $10K less than he did ten years ago, and nearly $20K less than five years ago. Hang in there. We are. :)
((((IndaShade)))) - we do understand. I'm glad you felt you could turn here for comfort :)
...indashade...that means that there is something even BETTER waiting for you around the corner. Keep your chin up! (I know it is hard..easier said than done) but don't give up, press on. We can't always see the big picture! ((((((hugs)))))Lisa
I noticed that when I lost my job I had a horrid time getting another one. But when I started working again I had job offers coming at me from all directions! Go figure!
Trust me, I've seen many idiots get a great job over someone who would do much better. With all my traveling around to various companies when I was an installer, I saw quite a few goofballs who didn't deserve the job they had...and they got paid much more than me. It doesn't always seem fair, but you just have to keep giving it your all. Stay hungry...you'll find what you're looking for...
I just keep wondering what I'm doing wrong-- is it what I'm saying or how I'm dressed or how I come across? I don't know. If I could just get someone to give me a chance........
Well, I'm not giving up. I'm just going to keep on keeping on until I get a job. I keep telling myself that everything is happening for my higher good, but I sure am starting to hate getting the mail (and the inevitable rejection letters).
Sherry
You get rejection letters! I sent out hundreds of resumes and cover letters and not a single one of them even recieved an acknowledgment! The funny part is that the one that hired me was the first one I mailed it to and they hired me on a reccomendation from another worker without ever reading it! I guess I came out better in the personal interview than on paper! Hang in there!
Hang in there! I'm going to be going through the same thing next year when I try to get employment after my course finishes. I'm glad not to have that stress right at the moment but it's going to be there.
At the moment I look like a fat blob - I don't recognize myself in the mirror. A diet of student burgers and chips plays havoc with the figure. so I'm piling my plate with veggies right now.
Do you have anyone to give advice on CVs and so on? Anyone to practise on?
Clawing up a cliff... I was watching a nature programme on tv last night. Know how penguins climb cliffs? They wait for the right wave to take them there and just give a funny little leap at the end. They seem to make it. It's all a matter of timing apparently. Don't climb that cliff. Look for that helpful wave!
hang in there - the right job WILL come along that will be perfect for you.
****network, network, network.....****
I think that is a big key to finding a job, a friend of a friend knows the person in charge of hiring... or a friend of a friend is looking for someone and instead of going thru human resources etc., you would hve an in.
good luck, and start networking......
Plug away and before you know it we'll be reading about your wonderful new job that you just love!! ((()))
Northerner....What a lovely little metaphor! I like the comparison to the wave and a lift. Jo
Northerner - you are so smart and wise to be able to make that analogy and put it to life. I am in awe of your wisdom. I think I may have lots to learn from you.
Joan
Do you have a trusted friend who is a business person, someone who could "mock interview" with you? Take it totally seriously, maybe even have witnesses. And as painful as it might be, a video of the interview might help you to buff and polish the great things you do and minimize the distracting things you might do.
One thing that's helped me a lot in interviews is doing my homework. I've found people online who listed my prospective company on their online resumes; e-mails between us helped me learn more about the corporate culture and what to expect working there. I walked into the interviews confident that I had a pretty good idea of what working there would be like. I was able to ask intelligent questions because I already knew a little about how things worked and could customize my questions to the work.
Finding a way to bring out a "wow!" response is good, too. A few days before my interview at a call center, I spent some time doing research online and learned about their catalogs and the products they sold. I put together a small binder with printouts of some of the company's webpages, and had questions ready for them. That really made a positive impact; several people during the interview process asked me if they could look at the binder. Some had not even seen the website! I got the job.
You can do it, IndaShade! You'll find your niche!
:o) Kimberley
