Hornet, wasp, or bee??

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm usually not afraid or jumpy around too many insects in my garden.

But this guy is new to it. He sees movement VERY well and is on guard at all times.
(this is the best photo I could get because every time I moved, he few up to check me out!)

I'm guess some type of deadly hornet?? We have the bold face hornet visit the garden or find them dead in the pool. I'm just wondering if this is a cousin of them?

Or if not a hornet, ???

Thanks for any help!
I'll post a picture of his face, but it is fuzzy.

I think I may have found him, but not 100% sure:

European Hornet (Vespa crabro)

I don't think it's a wasp, but a bee.

Is this it?

I dont think so and after looking at the European Hornet images, I dont think it is that either.

This one has white legs, white under belly and a yellow back.

He also has yellow "dreads" LOL! Sorry I dont know the body names of insects.

Dreads is as good a word as any. LOL I guess we wait to hear from the experts.

This appears to be a leaf-cutting bee (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae); it superficially resembles an Anthidium sp., but these do not have yellow 'fuzz' on their thorax - see http://tinyurl.com/2cwlmpw for an example.

Kwanjin: Thank you for your help and time!!

suunto: This is looking more like my guy. it has the 3 markings on it's rear-end and white legs.
Yeah the thorax is different than my guy but it is much closer than the hornet I thought it was!

I'm going to look for more images to see if I can see the side of the under belly.
Thank you Suunto.

I'll also try to get a better image of him. And if I have too, I'll have to do it the old fashion way... actually go to the library and look at images!!! : )

You're welcome, and I still enjoy visiting the library myself...

No problem. Glad you've finally been pointed in the right direction.
