Red Lilies - Other Than Asiatics

Athens, PA

I love the red lilies and it seems that my red lilies are all pink for some reason. Don't know if they were mismarked when I purchased these bulbs or if perhaps it is my soil, but they are pink and not red:(

I would really like for you all to post your photos of your red lilies and the name of the lily. The lilies can be all red or a combination of red and another color. This will give me a good idea of which lilies I should be looking for.

Here is a picture of my NOT red Oriental Arabian Red Lily. Last year it was pink too, although it was a deeper pink than this year, but it was still pink, just the same.

Thank you in advance for your photos and your help in my quest.

How I wish I could help you, Carolyn, but all "red" lilies, other than Asiatics, lean more to the red-violet side rather than pure fire engine red.

I'll continue to watch the thread in the hopes a true red appears.

Red violet is fine. I want something bolder than pink

Rio Negro is probably the darkest and so wonderful it's almost edible.

Dynamite is new (to me) this year so I'm not sure how much change in color there would be during a summer that isn't as dreadful as most of the nation has suffered this year.

Carolyn, 'American Journey' is about the most true red Lily I've seen. Its an OT and one of my favorites.

The sun gave that last pic a gold cast, but you can tell in this one how red the blooms are.

What a beauty, Neal!

Thanks, Pirl! It seems to be heat and sun proof too, we were having hot weather when it bloomed. Sadly, the 3rd bloom opened on that stem to reveal suspicious color streaking, as did the other 2 bulbs when they opened- so they're outta here.

Who did you buy them from, Neal?

They came from a bloomingbulb co op. While they were healthy and fine for the first 3 years, and showed no signs of virus, I did receive some virused Asiatics from that order. Those exhibited color streaking the first summer, and were immediately removed. I garden mostly organically, so I think some stray aphids have perpetuated the issue, and I find a few every year that have to be euthanized.

For some reason, there doesn't seem to be many choice sources selling them in the US, which is kinda funny since it's the American series, LOL. Several of the kinda iffy companies offer them, like Spring Hill/Brecks. The only reputable grower I know who offers them is The Lily Nook in Canada. If and when I replace American Journey, I believe that's where I'll get them.

It's a shame to lose such pretty lilies due to a virus.

It is odd that it's hard to find the American series in America!

I expect the rights to them were passed to the Dutch. Just conjecture here...

I kinda figured that too, Pard.

Pirl, its kinda nauseating each time I have to ditch a beauty, but I've finally learned not to cry about it, LOL. Last year's bummer was losing 'Red Hot'- I loved that one too.

American Journey is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing. That one is definitely going on my want list!

I have a red combo in Red Dutch.
