What would these be called correctly? Bulbils, off sets..../ These are on triumphator
Terminology please
Growing on lily Triumphator? That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen!
Looks awesome!
Lets see how they grow ... :)
I guess I have to just watch and wait. There is no sign of roots, so I can't seperate them from the mother plant. I would still like to know what to call them though. On a Daylily, they would be proliferations...on an orchid, a kiki, but on a lily, ????
They are called "bulbils". I can see one with a root and leaf... in your photo the right side stem near the bottom. I wouldn't try to remove them unless a light tap of the finger causes them to fall off.
Certainly not arguing with you pard, it's very curious!
I'm inclined to think they're stem bulblets as they don't appear to be growing in a leaf axil. Regardless, their treatment would be the same ~ as Pard suggested.
Just checked my gardening bible and bulbil appears to be the correct term as a bulbil doesn't necessarily have to grow in the leaf axil. Still think it's odd the way they're so green, ringing the stem and leafed out at such a small size. :)
Please keep us posted on their development!
Actually, I think they are growing where there was leaf loss on the stems. It is particularly noticeable on the left hand side stem. But you don't see the bulbils in the axils of healthy leaves. So, perhaps removing the lower leaves of this lily would be a way to propagate it.
It is weird, indeed. Especially the green color. We are accustomed to dark colored bulbils!
Oh, I see what you mean ~ I hadn't noticed the stem on the far left. It's interesting how there are 2 solid rings of bulbils on the far-right stem.
Actually (again), on the right hand stem, I can see five leaflets coming from bulbils. As for the rings, I still think the bulbils are coming from defunct leaf axils; they are just closer together. I think that is what you would see if you could actually examine these stems in your hand.
This is all probably more than OCCAROL ever wanted to know ;-)
LOL Been meaning to get my eyes checked. ;)
Actually, (again), if I click on the thumbnail to enlarge, then hold down Ctrl and hit the + key bunches if times, the photo gets really really big and then I can see whats going on in the (used to be) private life of Triumphator...
Well, I thought I knew what bulbils were until I saw this. They are growing all the way around the stalk, not just in the leaf axils...but only about 8" up the stalk. As you can see, there is also new growth comming from below the soil level. I had planted these in a pot last spring, when I got them, and left them there till this spring, when I planted them in the ground. Seems to have worked, huh? I really don't have room for a nusery bed, so I'll have to try potting the babies, I guess.
Thanks all!
Carol
