Does this thing need to be smushed ? Does it sting , or create a pest later ?

No, they only eats plants in that family. Do you have the plant called Snakeroot in the area?
More than likely it is time for it to pupate or it ran out of food. If you call nurseries in your area, you may can get a pipevine plant....just DON'T buy the A. Giantea, it is toxic to the caterpillars.
Try to get Wooly pipevine, Fimbriata, or the Serpentaria. I may be off on the spelling but close enough someone should know.

Just reading up on them and seems it might be ready to pupate. Ill turn it loose in the morning on and in a safe area , a honeysuckle covered area with Virginia creepers for it to pupate . That's what the research says they do. I'm just not up on these fuzzy crawlers, but have lots of azalias and butterfly bushes for it later . I've seen them here every year . Now to eliminate that wasp/hornet that attacts them . Thank you !
