It was about 2 cm long, and very docile--didn't try to escape (I originally caught it in a jar). At first I thought it was dead but then it started rubbing its face and chewing the leaf a bit.

Okay, I think I've found it. Is it Pelidnota punctata (grapevine beetle)?

When at Purdue University in the mid-1960s, I collected several of these, used an India ink pen to add more spots on the wing covers, and then released them in hopes of duping someone into thinking that they had found a new subspecies. To the best of my knowledge, none of my altered specimens ever were recaptured...
