...and I saw a handful of these last year, but neglected to identify them then.

This fuzzy fellow is making a meal on my Weeping Larch (Larix kaempferi 'Pendula').

Is this part of the beast? Or related?

The caterpillar appears to be the larva of a white-marked tussock moth, Orgyia leucostigma (Lepidoptera: Erebidae; subfamily Lymantriinae) - see http://tinyurl.com/2bm4sbk for an image. The last image appears to be a cocoon of a wasp that parasitized one of these caterpillars - see http://tinyurl.com/26sz273.

Thank you, suunto.

I think I'll let these fellows keep dining, and see how many parasitic wasps enjoy the bounty.
