I found this thing - looks like some sort of larvae. It was in the soil in my Earthbox. The box was planted with tomatoes earlier this year, and I was going through it getting ready to plant fall tomatoes. The mix is Miracle Grow Potting Mix and was new in the spring. It's a little over 2" long and the end of it wiggles.
CLOSED: What the heck is it
This is a pupa of a sphinx moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae); likely that either of a tobacco hornworm or tomato hornworm (Manduca sp.) - see http://tinyurl.com/yb9nago for detailed information.
So I guess this is the offspring of all those tomato hornworms this summer.
