Cicada

I agree! ....with ecrane3 that is. They are big and definitely odd but quite amazing when you learn more about them. As far as I know, they pose no harm to your plants. I was just thinking that is is unusual for us Texas folks to not hear their familiar loud buzz in the evenings. There hasn't been a single "song" or shed skin that I've seen yet this year. They are supposed to be here already. Unusual seasons we've had this last 18 months. If you are one of those online researchers , I suggest you look them up. They are an amazing survivor.

The Wikipedia article on them is decent and even includes some sound files and a time sequence 'video' of one emerging from its molt. As a matter of fact, the one shown molting looks very much like the one you posted and is known by the common name "dog day cicada" as it usually comes out late in the dog days of summer. Down this direction, they are more commonly known as "July flies" because they are first seen in mid to late July. I believe the genus is Tibicen, which is the most common cicada in the States.

This is an interesting site on cicadas and katydids. Enjoy listening to the night sounds. Sometimes I just sit on the porch late at night and listen.

Haven't heard a single cicada yet this year, but it's a bit early for us. I kind of like their buzzsaw sound at the beginning of their season--it means summer is in full swing. But after a while I just want them to shut up. hehe

Loved finding their empty "skins" when I was a kid and now my kids are carrying on the fascination
