Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi,

What are these creatures, which are appearing in the water seeping from my container-plants?

The one in the picture is about 2 cm long, which is one of the larger ones.

The plants were fertilized with organic fertilizer containing:

Blood Meal
Feather Meal
Bone Meal
Chicken Manure
Organic Sulphate of Potash
Kelp Meal
Bat Guano
Alfalfa Meal
Humic Acid
Beneficial Bacteria RBC104
Micronized Mycorrhizae

This is a larva of a fly in the genus Eristalis (Diptera: Syrphidae). Commonly known as rat-tailed maggots, they are harmless scavengers on decomposing organic matter - see http://tinyurl.com/2bm2v6o for more detailed information.

Suunto!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

My husband was convinced this was some very nasty creature, and I can't tell you how relieved he was to get this ID!

You are the best!
