I have an Autumn Blaze maple and have noticed several leaves have chunks out of them.
Edited to add that this was a 14 ft. tree when we put it in 3 years ago. It otherwise looks well and has grown quite a bit.

What is eating Maple leaves?
First one will be moth or butterfly larvae - if it is just a few leaves, no need to do anything, the caterpillars are providing food for birds. Actually, I suspect the caterpillars have already been eaten, otherwise you would see them.

Thanks ~ you're probably correct as there were no critters in sight. :)
