Green Ash planted it about 6 yrs ago. Mulched, and I water it with cow manure tea. Finally started growing this year and really looking like something and then I noticed this. Sort of a sap stuff at the 'joints' of the tree. Then I noticed it along the trunk also. Almost seems to have a very fine sawdust in those areas too, maybe the wound is causing the sap? I haven't noticed any bugs except ants, which I am sure are attracted to the sap but didn't do the damage. I posted it in the insect ID cause I'm just sure this is insect damage of some kind?
Someone told me they thought it looked like some kind of borer. I can spray the tree outside of course, but I feel like the bug is 'inside' and spraying it won't do much good. Is there anything I can do for it? Wondered if there was something I could water the tree with that would poison the borers?
I hope it's not a gonner. Nothing is actually dead on the tree and just noticed this damage very recently, as the tree looked normal this spring.
Borers on my Green Ash, what to do?
Try calling your county extension office or Missouri Department of Conservation toll-free at 866-716-9974. These days they are really concerned about the Ash trees. Someone might come out and investigate for the Emerald Ash Borer and then tell you what bug you may have. All I know about EAB is that they leave little S-shaped holes in the bark where their larvae live. I don't think oozing sap is a sign of EAB. You said your tree looks healthy, but there is some bug in there. I had some kind of borer in my pine tree and a cherry tree last year. Both trees recovered on their own. No oozing sap this year.
Hope you get an answer Frilly.
Frilly,
I lost an Ash tree last year, to the Emerald Ash Borer. There was definitely no oozing sap, like your picture shows.
I hope you can stop the advance of whatever is harming your tree.
How do you know it was EAB?
Was it the same time of the year? Maybe the season has something to do w it producing the sap?
It is covered w ants, they aren't hurting it are they? I never thought ants would do damage, just figured they were there for the sap.
I have a Serviceberry tree, that is about 4 years old, and it's leaves are turning a beautiful red, you'd think it was September instead of July. We had a warm, dry spring with precip running about 3 inches below normal and temps about 2-3 weeks warmer than normal. As of late we have had a good amount of rain and are now 2-3 inches above normal and still running warm. There is no sign or insects.
I am assuming that the tree is showing signs of stress. Does anyone know if this will cause major problems and should I be doing something?
Dee
Sorry about the previous post I meant to start a new thread, but ..I have never heard about the ash borer causing the sap oozing like in your pics. Usually one looks for the hole in the shape of a D
I am attaching a link that has some further info. Hopefully you have another problem.

OK the link says to mix up and pour imidacloprid around the base of the tree. As it drinks this up, it gets throughout the tree killing any insects that are in it. I will go to MFA monday and buy some. If it is borers, they will hopefully die soon. :) If it is not borers, I would still think it will kill whatever it is and problem is solved. Or it dies anyway, and either way I've nothing to lose.
dmwade: My Serviceberry does that sometimes too. I don't know what causes it, but it always recovers. I have two different kinds. It seems to happen to the native one and not the hybrid grandiflora. Also the grandiflora behaves and doesn't sucker like the native one. It's a much prettier Serviceberry too, not so wild and unruly.
Frilly, I hope your Ash recovers. I wouldn't worry about the aunts, unless they get under the bark. Keep mulch away from the trunk, aunts use it as a road to the tree.
Oh, but pastime...whither goest the uncles?
