perhaps chorotypus gallinaceus? please let me know. if so, I'm having a hard time finding much about this little guy on line.

Where was this photograph taken? I doubt very much that this is a Chorotypus sp.; but as it is a nymph, getting a positive i.d. will be more difficult than if it were an adult (grasshopper nymphs often appear quite different from adults of the same species).

It was taken on my back porch in Chicago. If this is a nymph, how much larger will he get?
This could be a nymph of the Carolina locust (Dissosteira carolina; Orthoptera: Acrididae), in which case the adult could be about 1.5" body length with a wing span of up to 4" - see http://tinyurl.com/2c7fb58 for images and detailed information. This is a very common and widespread species.
