There are a few on this forum that have pictures of their vanilla's! Look it up on plantfinder, you'll see lots of pics of people with their vanillas and the beans and flowers :) They're beautiful!

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

josh....now you know...those pics will just make me feel bad about myself!!! like goth...o my she has some beauties!!

this living in a 9b i do believe is going to agree very well with me! plant wise that is.

The variegated Vanilla does produce, but it is not as vigorous as the normal type.

As Gothqueen stated, they do need to get of size to bloom.

Being that you're in Florida (tobee43) you could place the potted Vanilla at the base of a tree and let it grow up the tree. That way it will mature to fruit bearing size.

Once the Vanilla vine has produced flowers, it is best to manually pollinate them to insure fruit production.

i'm scared metro!!!

i am a newly planted 9b....came from a sub zone 4 and this winter in r 9b zone we had 18 days of sub zero weather....so i would be afraid to leave it out for the winter...even on the south side...

i truly am confused. people say they have never seen such climatic changes in this area, however, i have already lost from what i understand...perhaps the ONLY totally white albino agave there was to be had.....i thought covered it could take the 30 degrees...no way...so i would hate to lose this little gem!!

i suppose i could put the pot under a tree and see what happens...that way if there is freezing weather coming i can clip it and bring it in???

thanks so much for the info!!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

My Favorites absolutely are my Blue Amaryllis *worsleya* and my spotted Griffinia :)

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

josh....you got me on that one...it truly since i just saw one for the first time on ur post saw it...i'm still drooling!

how much for one of those....a million dollars did you say or two???

but i want to go move in with gothqueen......actually into her greenhouse and hunt wild pig.....LOL!!! and eat it under here ae ae musa.......after all i do where black nail polish on my toes...but not to be goth...just because i spend too much time in the garden bare footed and that way it's easy to clean up fast....i know WAY to much info!! LOL!!!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I just bought a second Worsleya today on e-bay, it's a 3 year old bulb, I got it for 33 dollars! You need two for pollination so I figured I should go ahead and get another one and they can grow up together :)

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL!!! josh...u really r tooooooooooo funny!!!!

come on...i KNOW they got the trash can on Ebay!! hehehehehe

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

hehe :)

Really tho, they're very pretty! I don't have one, it makes me sad :(

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

josh.....i do have a few now...a couple variegated ones...but small.....we lost one that "came" with the house but i didn't like much it was white and uninteresting...now we got orange and hot pinks...and a variegated yellow one...but there are in small pots...i know many people lost them during the heavy freeze this year down here so i was afraid to buy big ones...you'd have to cut them back and keep them in your greenhouse basement...

besides it's always more fulfilling when u start with a little something and make it BIG!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Do yours ever set seed :) The var. ones?

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

well the one i had up north never did.....and i had that raspberry ice for about 3 years....i'm certain there is a way to root them....this is allllllllllllllllll so new to me...i could get anything to grow in the snow.

someone must know who to root one.....maybe like roses...by burying a stem under the dirt??? u think...when my get large enough and if it can be done i'll send you a piece....actually at a plant show i found one variegated one that had TWO...that's right josh.........2 different colored blooms on the same plant...lol....problem is since they are not in bloom right now i can't tell which one it was!!!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Oooh :) I love it when there are two different colored blooms on one plant :) LOVE IT! Have you ever heard of a Fruit Cocktail tree? Pears Apples Nectarines and something else ???

Crazy, Huh?

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL! yeah josh...i saw a fake picture of one in one of those penny nursery catalogs... but i'm from Missouri when it comes to that sort of stuff.

u know...when it's too good to be true it's usually cuz it's NOT!

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I'd love to know how to root bougies myself. :) They're lovely plants. :)

-Joe

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

joe...someone MUST know...u think???? maybe someone will answer that question?? i hope!

Keaau, HI

To root Bougainvillea: take stem cuttings that are about 8 inches long and 1/2 inch diameter; remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting; stick half-way in growing medium; keep them in the shade and moist till they are well rooted and are growing, then transplant to garden or larger pots.

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

Metrosideros....like vermiculite...for the medium??? or should the medium be more substantial like peat moss??

thanks!!!

Keaau, HI

Hi Tobee!

I use Pro-Mix BX, which is peat based. Vermiculite, sand, perlite, or other sterile medium will work. Soil will work too, but if the growing medium is sterile you'll get better results.

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

thank you so much!! sterile is clear enough....now maybe i can send josh a cutting!!!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Maybe :) YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love a cutting!

Sarasota, FL

Josh and Batflower, I've grown Brunfelsia from seed and cuttings. What do you want to know? Seeds often take 6 wks - 3 mos to come up. They can take up to 2 yrs to flower.
Batflower the most likely difficulty you'd have is getting people to mail to Canada. I've mailed Madhavi vines-Hiptage benghalensis bare root and packed in poly crystals to a Krishna devotee in Canada (have to have a US post office form attached). In exchange she paid for a seed shipment from an Indian man selling seeds of India plants from ebay.ca for me. The seeds were on my want list.
The Arjuna trees from those seeds are now 6 ft tall.

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

yeah...josh, i'm going send you one as soon as a piece gets long enough to send....8 inches i think he said...so mine are still little but growing well!!

Keaau, HI

Brunfelsia australis grows from root suckers here. Possibly because of the shallow volcanic soil.
