Mother Tulasi (pron. tull-see). aka holy basil. She purifies the atmosphere, has a celestial fragrance (especially in bloom), brings about all auspiciousness, is an adaptogen (like ginseng), & has been used since 3,000 B.C.E.

I love that Cochliostema pic :) It's beautiful!

I'm really trying to expand my collection, I'm trying to grab some rare, beautiful and unusual.

I really wanna try a Hoya, what's a good one to get? Where is a good place to get it?

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Any gardenia is my favorite. :) Jasminum sambac. Vanilla orchids. Gingers. All of the above. :)

Vanilla!

Your vanilla is a much lighter shade than mine, mine is lemon yellow. What type is that one??

Keaau, HI

I've not seen a Vanilla vine with flowers so yellow as yours.

My plants always get greenish-yellow flowers and leaves that are 6 to 8 inches long. It is Vanilla planifolia. I don't know what cultivar it might be.

Vanilla, the product!

I fresh vanilla has no comparison to store bought! It's almost difficult nowadays to find a pure vanilla extract, everything is imitation!

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Oooooh vanilla. Chocolate gets all of the attention, but there's not one thing "plain" about lovely vanilla. :)

Metrosideros and gothqueen, I am a leaf-colored green with horticultural envy. :)

Metrosideros.....if you have a moment please for a question????

does this vanilla plant produce the spice?? i was told by whom i consider as a reliable source that it was a" VARIEGATED VANILLA ORCHID".....it was given to me as a gift...and is doing quite well...however, i have no idea what to do with him...do i leave him in the pot?? i have had him for over 3 months and he hasn't had much growth movement??? i know absolutely nothing about him!

That is a Vanilla Orchid! :) How long is he? I know they take a while to bloom, they've gotta be mature at I think 10ft at the least?

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

yeah...josh, i think it is....(so now i have 2 RELIABLE sources verifying what the plant is..but i have had NO movement...u think i should repot it...???? this is new to me. i may have designed gardens for years up north....but i'm a lost person down here in this neck of the forest....

what do you think...it has only grown about an inch??? does this one produce the spice???

this inquiring mind really wants to know...:))

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yeah, it will produce the vanilla beans!

I would repot it yes, in more of an orchid mix! Also, if it has any "air roots" make sure you spritz them as well, it really helps, spritz until they're more of a green :)

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

thanks so much josh!! i rec'd two of them and gave one to one of the only person's i met since i moved down here...(a retired horticulturist from disney!)....anyway...i was given the plant by one of my old suppliers and she said it was "rare" and thought it was a ginger...so this nice guy loved gingers and i knew nothing about them...so i figure if i gave him one and kept one...one of us should be able to keep it alive!

i will repot it for certain...no air roots as yet..however, it's one of the ONLY plants i haven't feed a yet but will!!

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

That's a beautiful plant. :)

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

thanks so much joe! i hope it continues to grow for me!

I have several variegated vanillas in the greenhouse. They are lovely plants but have to get pretty large just like the regular to actually bloom. Here's one kinda mixed up with a big old Philodendron

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

beautiful goth...any suggestions in reference to what type of plant food to encourage a bit of growth???

Gainesville, FL

i use time release like nutricote. i recently had to cut a huge amt of my vanillas down and pot them into 7 and 10 gal pots on trellis they were going way up into the 'attic' where the heat is very imtense and dying back up there. Some also had damage to the stems between the ground and the main body of the vines from the ugly cold we had last winter...since they were all planted very near to the wall and many were actually just growing up the glazing itself they got some cold damage. Now I have several huge pots with 4 ft trellis of vanillas variegated and non wound all around, starting over. I guess altogether I may have had about 40-50+ feet of mature flowering vines.

did they flower for you???? they were that long??? wow...i also use time release, however, since what i use also releases at a certain temp...the time release theory goes right out the window as soon as the high temps hit.

did that root first b4 u potted them up??? sorry.. to ask so many questions but i really would like this plant to live awhile ....and have NO clue about it.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Wow, did you harvest any vanilla beans from them?
