worst garden mistakes

If that is Perilla, it will reseed big time, you don't need it to be a perennial.

Many people ship plants, so it can be done!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, what is that purple plant? Does it like shade or sun? How big does it get?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Stephanie...
Perilla Beefsteak...not sure it is this variety but it stays purple and others showed green..I think this is the one I have. It is in the coleus family. I find it can't take dry hot sun very well but will do well in shade / part sun and loves water. If you want I will pot some for you.

save seed.....it seeds very easy

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I love it. Have had it for years and it fills in all the empty places in a bed. I just pull it up if it is in the way.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila I want some purple Perilla Beefsteak badly! Are you coming to the Fall RU in Jacksonville? If not, would you be willing to do a mail trade with me for some?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We will see when it is this year vs. the Arlington one. I will definately pot some for you and save seeds too. I have a tree that is for Ken, from the San Marcos RU, so I will be getting it to him some way.

Thank you!

No problem Bonnie. Mamajack is going to pick me up a pot of it and ship it to me. Thanks for thinking of me. I will probably be kicking myself since I am sure I will be expected to start cooking with it asap!! ( at least as soon as it is big enough)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i don't mind perillo either. it does reseed but are easy to remove. i still think trumpet vine in the front yard is the worst possible mistake any one could have made. so i win. hahaha

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, I'd love to have some! I have the perfect spot for it in a nice shady bed that needs some color other than green!

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Christi, I definitely need to do that! I want to get some seeds from that gorgeous morning glory of yours too.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Is perilla the same as curly basil?

Talihina, OK

I have to go with Lou on that purple plant I do love it but it is like an addition ,you must always be on your toes are it will be in every bed you own ..This year I am keeping it down to just about 12 or so plants so can try and control the amount of seeds it puts on..YEAH RIGHT ..I saw some growing up through a sidewalk down town (like Talihina has a downtown ))),this was last year but at the same time I would never want to get rid of all of it

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You got it Stephanie....

Christi, I was told that this was "Purple Ruffles" basil when someone first gave it to me, then others said no. After checking the pictures I agreed, glad I didn't try to cook with it.

Mamajack....the worst garden mistake here is me with a shovel!!

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

About 12 years ago I had a duplex in Austin with a tiny backyard. I decided to put gravel instead of grass and put in plastic instead of weed barrier. After applying a few tons of gravel and a few weeks later, i realized that the plastic couldnt drain and all the dog urine just gathered. The whole yard smelled like ammonia and I had to pull it all up.

On another note, I accidentally used fiberglass insulation as toilet paper as a child. That was a very very very very bad mistake.

By the way, this is my root beer plant that started as a one leaf transplant about three years ago.

ok jujube------you get the prize for worst garden mistake!!! now i wonder what the prize should be?

and i can't even think about that fiberglass insulation story without a shiver! i remember just touching it as a child and getting stuff enbedded in my skin---

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

ROFLOL!! Jujube...TMI....LOL!! Guess I did almost as bad. On a road trip once (no roadside parks back then) I had to go and my cousin handed me leaves to wipe with. Guess what kind...yep poison ivy!!

Beautiful hojo santa, Bobyrd! Just wondering... how tall does that plant get for you? I have one in a pot, and a spot in my yard where I'd just love to see it spread its wings. But it needs to reach a certain height to be really pretty there.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You guys are just too funny, Goodness Gracious!!

I was playing in a junkyard outside Austin when I used that lovely pink cotton as toilet paper. I ran screaming with my legs spread far apart as they would go. I locked myself in a bathroom at a local restaurant and they called my mother to come get me cause my brother thought I was bit by a snake. The whole crowd at the restaurant was gathered around the door giving words of encouragement and trying to coax me out of there. My mother finally dragged me out and put me in the car. Once she found out what happened, she started crying and laughing so hard she couldnt function for at least 5 minutes. The people in the parking lot probably thought she was having a breakdown.

I was around 8 years old and it took weeks to get all the stuff out of my nooks and crannies.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

pbtxlady, this hojo santa is about 5 feet tall.

Plano, TX

jujube-reminds me of my sister using little sticker balls as permenant rods when we were little
it was popular to have home perms then (that looked really bad-lots of fuzzy hair) and we would sit at the kitchen table and whine about wanting to leave and the strong smell making us feel sick and the hair being pulled etc

but when we played in the prairie my sister played like she was giving herself a perm with the stickers--rolled her hair up in them and no way to get them out--barber had to cut all her hair off!

Given enough water, my root beer plant will go to about 6 feet or more. Spreads by roots and will come up several feet away from the mother plant. I still love it. The Mexican yard crew said they pay $17 a pound for the leaves at the mercado. Use the leaves to wrap fish or tamales. Don't believe they actually eat the leaf.

No the leaf is not eaten just imparts a flavor. We do tamales with banna leaves and avacado leaves.

Linda.. LOL!!
I bet you were right there handing her those Sycamore balls!

Funny story Dyson!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

Funny things we remember about childhood....now that is a good topic for a thread. Hmmmm.....

The Japanese use young Perilla leaves in salads and cooking. Don't try this with the old ones which are really bitter. Trust me on this. And, don't mistake Purple Curly Leaf Basil for Perilla. I personally don't care for the flavor of Purple Curly-Leaf Basil, but others may. I plant Purple Leaf for the leaf color, but use Lemon Basil, Sweet Italian, or Thai for cooking, depending on the recipe.

I still have tears from laughing about the insulation used as toilet paper. As a child growing up in Florida, I made the terrible mistake once of making myself a comfy place to sit with Spanish moss. After sitting in it a while, I discovered the moss was full of chiggers. I was miserable for a time. Still, I don't think this would be as bad as using insulation for toilet paper.

Speaking of gardening mistakes, I was picking the extremely hot tiny peppers then I had the urge. A guy should always wash his hands before tinkling after picking hot peppers or end up with great pain on your business.

Plano, TX

ouch!!
funny how pain is kinda funny ---------------------------------much, much later!!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

lol. like the t-shirt says.........
it's all funny till somebody gets hurt.
then it's hilarious.

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

Somebody watching me with my pants on the ground and the hose on my business would have a good laugh. It wasn't funny at the time. I invented new swear words that day.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

ROFLOL!!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

ROFLOL too. wildcat you ain't right. would that i could have been there to see that.
