My DH found this on the road & said there were lots of them. Anyone know what it is? Thank you.

CLOSED: Huge black grasshopper looking bug.
Possibly Eastern Lubber Grasshopper: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showimage/471/
This is a dark phase of the eastern lubber grasshopper, Romalea microptera (Orthoptera: Romaleidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/243k6l4 for an example.
I found a bunch of highly variable images, so wasn't sure. Thanks!
's O.K., Melody - I didn't mean to step on your answer; I should have double-checked before posting my response...
I'm glad you clarified...I found so many different ones and I didn't know if they molted, or if this was a phase. I was hoping you'd pop in.
Thank you all :) Kinda makes me wish I'd have had my DH put it back where he got it instead of letting it go in the yard!
