CLOSED: I can't remember the common name for this butterfly

Riverside, CA(Zone 8a)

This butterfly was found stuck to the radiator on my truck but I saw one laying eggs on my tomato plants today. What is the common name for this butterfly?. I forgot! It is about the same size as those very common white cabbage butterflies. It's not a good photo but it's all I have right now.

Oh yeah! That's it. Painted Lady! I've lived here in SoCal for 60 years and that is all I ever see is your first example. It looks exactly like your first example; the Vanessa species. That's a very nice photo of it. These butterflies are not as common as the white cabbage butterflies. There are some years when we seem to be overrun by the white ones. Thanks again for your help!

Too out of focus for me.

About all I can say is that it is in the family Nymphalidae, possibly a Vanessa sp. (that includes the painted lady and relatives) - see http://tinyurl.com/2bnurxv for an example, or even a tortoiseshell - see http://tinyurl.com/27p636b for an example.
