Angelica ?

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

I am brand new to seed saving. Angelica seems like a prime candidate since it holds its seeds in such a huge umbrel. I am, however, totally clueless. One umbrel is brown and ready to start dropping. Should I just shake this onto some paper and let is dry (and let the little critters walk away), or is there more to it? Each seed has a protective husk. Do I want to somehow wait until that sheds to get to the true seed inside, or is the husk OK? Thanks for any insight.

Just shake the umbrel with the brown seeds. The ones who are ripe will drop in the bag. Use a paper bag, where you can leave them for some time to dry. If you want them to use them for yourself, you'd better let the plant drop the seeds on the ground, they will germinate next spring in big quantities.
If you want the seeds for trading or selling, store them after drying in a cool and dry place in ziploc bags or something else that won't let humidity in and keep the mice away.
Don't know what you mean by the protective husk. The seeds should look like this picture

Thank you Jonna -- if I peel apart the outer husk, there is a little black seed inside and I was unsure if I needed to get to that point or not. The answer appears to be no, so this is way easy - I just shook the umbrel over a piece of paper and have tons. And, yes, I do know they will seed themselves -- I foolishly shook all the umbrels the first year I had this plant, only to end up with millions of seedlings. I now leave a couple on for the birds and clip off the rest.

I thought I'd start by getting some medium sized metal containers to put a bunch in, with a photo label on the outside, and then repackage into small cellophane envelopes as needed. I also read a good idea in this forum somewhere to sieve them first to get rid of the immature seeds. I think I'm on to a new fun gardening venture...

Thanks again for the clarification. Deb (Washington State)
