CLOSED: Is this some kind of Bottle Fly?
These do appear to be in the family Calliphoridae (see http://tinyurl.com/23yzk4s for an example) that includes blow flies and the so-called blue and green bottle flies.
Thanks suunto,
I discovered that mine is likely the common green bottle fly named Lucilia sericata. I understand that there are MANY green bottle fly species - some so similar that it takes a microscope to tell them apart..
I also discovered that Lucilla sericata is an important species to forensic entomologists. Like most Calliphorids (you hit the nail on the head), this insect has been heavily studied and its life cycle and habits are well documented. Due to this, the stage of the insect’s development on a corpse is used to calculate a minimum period of colonization, so that it can used to aid in determining the time of death of the victim.
Thanks again
