How to get seeds?

I have been finding Hostas all over that I would like to have. So I have been collecting the seeds. My question is, Is the seed ready to sow as soon as the flower is brown and dead? I also took the entire flower stalk and have it hanging in my house, in case I did sow them too soon. So when is the right time to sow a hosta seed?
