I found this on a trail behind my house in Botwood, Newfoundland (Canada). I thought the only bees we had in Newfoundland were bumble bees... I've never seen anything like this before. It was certainly bigger than a bumble bee. Anyone have any idea what it is?
Sorry about the image quality, it was taken with my cellphone.
CLOSED: Some kind of bee?
I bet its some sort of wasp and not a bee at all.
I did a bit of googling, and I think it may be some kind of sawfly.
This is an elm sawfly, Cimbex americana (Hymenoptera: Cimbicidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/26of7ly for an image. Their larvae often are mistaken for caterpillars - see http://tinyurl.com/27kj9g3
I think you nailed it. Thanks!
