CLOSED: What kind of ?beetle? is this?

Gharghur, Malta

I found this beauty sitting on my table outside about a month ago in Malta, Europe. Haven't been able to find an exact match yet, I am sure one of you can help me out. The picture is of excellent quality, so you must be able to find a match.

Thanks!

This appears to be a red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a serious pest of date palms - see http://tinyurl.com/3ynvuso

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

That looks like the Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), which is a very destructive pest now well established in Malta:

We have no information on this species in BugFiles, so I have created a page for it here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/6476/

We would be pleased if you would add your picture to this page. Just scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link: » Upload an image of this bug

Wow, definitely a match. It was quite a sight, should I have killed this beautiful creature? It is true, across the valley from our home there used to be a huge palm tree next to a house. It was completely killed by these guys. I just didn't know what they looked like, or that I had one that close to me. Would this bug have been dangerous?

Thank you all

Dangerous? To you, no; to the palm tree(s), yes...
