So I was at my friends house in the country the other day, he lives just outside of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and we saw an insect flying around glowing. It would light up for about a second, go dark for a second and then glow again in a pulse pattern like that. We thought it was cool so we tried to catch them, which happened quite easily. This did not look like a regular firefly, it look more like a riverfly/moth (not like a beetle at all). Does anybody know what this could be, i cant find any information online, and I have never heard of a firefly in western Canada before. As well this is the first time we have ever seen these kinds of bugs.
Firefly??
Fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) are indeed native to Alberta - see http://tinyurl.com/322rjf8, and that undoubtedly is what you saw. I do not know of any other bioluminescent flying insect in your area.
