Could this be some type of a weevil? I have found quite a few of them on my phlox plants. Curiously, they appear to "play dead" when I get too close to them to take a picture. They will drop from the plant, and curl up as much as possible and just lay there.

This is indeed a weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae); it is in the subfamily Entiminae (broad-nosed/short-snouted weevils), and looks suspiciously like a well-known pest species, the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) - see http://tinyurl.com/2e98ta4 for images and detailed information.
