About an inch tall as seen here on Asclipias tuberosa 'Butterfly weed'.
Sorry I have no shot of the top of the wings.

Your butterfly looks to me to be a Hickory Hairstreak - Satyrium caryaevorus, but I'm pretty rusty so don't take my word for it. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/115898
