Prolasped Uterus

Bridgewater, ME

I think that is what is going on with my golden sexlink.A round red thing is hanging out of her and there was blood on her feathers.I washed and cleaned her up last night and put her in by herself, she is eating and drinking, this morning she looks messy again and it looks like a broken egg maybe comming out of her,my question is has anyone heard of putting honey on that and pushing it back in again?I read this on byc last night.some said it works great and others said it took a while for it to work.Is there anything else I should know or do?

Well I brought her in and cleaned her up again and put the honey on her and it statred going in but every time she talkied to me it would come out and go in,so I`ll wait and see if she looks any different later on today,if not I will not use it again and just keep her cleaned up and away form the others. She is eating and drinking very well and getting scrambled eggs, tried some yougurt but she did not like that.

It sounds like you are doing the right things. I haven't heard of honey for a prolapse, but it was used in the Civil War for wounds and is supposed to be an effective antiseptic.

I think maybe you want to go light on the food for a couple days, since she has to push to pass what's left and it is from the same place as the egg and might make it harder for the prolapse to reduce.

OK thanks,no more eggs, should I just gie her a few layer pelllits in the morning and a few at night?I was just checking on her and she looks the same

Also you may want to keep her in the dark or at least semi-darkness for a good part of the day because then she will stop laying. The day length regulates the cycle which is why many chickens lay far less, or stop laying entirely, in the winter months when the daylight cycle is short. If you can stop her cycling for a while, that allows healing without the pressure of an egg every day or so.

I cleaned her again this morning and if felt like grit comming out of her,she may have a broken egg inside her,I`ll just keep doing what I`m doing and if I feel she is not doing well then something will have to be done, but right now she is eating and drinking and wanting in with the others.I can put a dark sheet over her cage and give her more darkness,

Sounds good Green.

DrDoolotz how did your prolapsed duck do?

Porkpal - sorry to say she died. She was an outdoor duck and unfortunately some flies must have discovered her injury. She had been doing well in her hutch outside and the swelling was much reduced, but then one day she was not looking as well and upon closer inspection I found the entire injured area to be absolutely crawling with maggots. I cleaned her immediately but it was too late and she died later that day. I felt horrible about it but I had not thought about that aspect. If it happens again I will confine any recuperating duck indoors.

Sorry to hear that, it sounded so hopeful.

Ceaned her this morning again and while I was running the warm water over her butt I could see she was pushing and I could tell it was an egg,so I finished cleaning her up and put her in her cage with the heat lamp and she sqatted and layed a huge egg,now I`m not sure if it is prolasped U,when I bring her in again to clean her I will take a picture and maybe someone can tell me for sure. She still is eating and drinking.I just looked at her again and there seems to be clean liquid dripping out of her.She is in a dark cage with a little light and I make it really dark at 7pm and don`t take it off untill 6;30am.I hope she stops laying eggs untill she heals up.I weighted a exta large egg on my scales and the weight was 2.4 and the one she layed the scales did not go up that far, and the shell was gritty feeling like sand paper. When she was laying the egg it kinda looked like a big scab on her outside, but not sure.Just come home from a chicken swap and I did not bring home anything(yea) and sold one EE.I did trade a Rhode Island Red pullit for a buff orpington pullit, thats because when I was bought the BO`S as chicks she was in there and as she grew she turned red and the lady said bring her to the swap and you can trade her for the BO.
