thank you --so egg carton to dixie cup to permanent -right?
mini violet babies
Great growing, Jeannie63! Missed that post DUH!!
Jill is right, planolinda. Small stages. Depends on what you are growing. If you are growing a standard which usually goes into a 4 inch pot max. You don't want to go from solo cup to 4 inch pot. Too big of a jump. Pots are usually 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inch to 3 inch to 4 inch. Lynn posted above about the 1/3 rule. Measure the width of the plant across from tip of leaf to tip of leaf and divide by 3. If the plant leaves measure 9 inches across then you divide that by 3 and it should go into a 3 inch pot. Don't go up to the next size (4 inch pot) until it measures at least 12 inches. Did this help or did I just confuse you more? I know sometimes I don't explain things well :(

Sometimes I use smaller containers in between, like I said, it just depends on what the roots look like when I separate the plantlets. Bear in mind that you might have 6 or more little plantlets growing around one leaf in an egg carton, so you may want to pot them up individually in another egg carton to let their roots grow more before moving them to bigger quarters.
And yes, growing trailers is just the same... when they get bigger, you may want to pinch out the center of the crown to encourage branching if it hasn't started to "trail" (get multiple crowns) on its own.
Hapen to have this and want to share;
This is a good size for seperating. This leaf was put down in April, shot out the plantlets within 2 weeks (very fast), however my stuff grows kinda-slow because it is in AC 76 degrees and therefore quite dry. I am starting to use fruit and veg clams (plastic) and put the egg carton inside and close the top. (another reason I like the egg carton - also cheap - also recycle at least one more time)
thank you one and all
i have decided african violet people are really helpful and knowledgeable!! i appreaciate your advice and pictures--i know i will be back with more questions as the time goes by and good to know i have so many experts to help me along!!
Planolinda - you asked some very good questions - thank you! You and I will be learning this together :)
I am still learning and love it. Even though I have been there and done that. years back when I grew under lights we didn't have all this plastic. Solo cups came later, The plastic clams/dome are quite new as well. Zippy plastic bags were not available. They are good for putting up cuttings.Put soil into one corner place your leaf/plant and zip up partially.But
I like my egg cartons in the clam.
yes jeannie we can learn togethr! we will have to share our success and failures!
helene it sounds like we have it much easier than you did as a newbie!
funny thing happened yesterday-stopped at a garage sale and what did she have but african violet potsjon raised dots with matching saucers --really very pretty and made just for african violets! i think it is a sign i was meant to go there and/or am meant to raise african violets!
