how to deal with cucumber beetles

I am handpicking the squash bugs 2x/day and so far keeping up with them, but I can only catch a few cucumber beetles.

How much damage can they do to my squash, melons and cukes? I often find them in the blossoms. Do they destroy the blossoms and hence reduce the fruit?

What can be done about them?
