Sister described "as large as the palm of her hand." !! Curious what kind of spider this is, huge, weird looking mandibles.

This is not a spider but a related arachnid in the family Phrynidae. It is commonly called a tailless whip-scorpion, see http://bugguide.net/node/view/4608/bgimage for some images.
