Is the native passion vine I got at the last swap invasive? It is sending up new vines all over the flower bed.

I think they can be invasive. I have one, and I dig up probably a dozen or more "extra" vines a year. Most grow up in the lawn, and I just mow them down. I allow a few others to come up in the beds beside the momma plant. I just love the flowers and the scent, so I put up with it. Keep a watchful eye on it, but I think it's worth all the extra effort.

You might save one for me, if you're coming to the NT RU in the fall. My little maypop almost died from the cold winter, and then just as it was about to make a comeback, the sprinkler guys got it. I'm looking for a replacement.
I think all passion vines sucker, but it can be a good thing for propagation, and they are not hard to pull up.
Pot them up and use them for trades. Also if you have a greenhouse or a place you can keep one inside to overwinter, the Gulf Frits are out very early in the spring looking for a place to lay eggs. I have a PV that is evergreen and love it for that reason. It gives the bfs a head start. Once you get them using the vine as a host plant you won't have a problem with them being invasive, the cats eat them to the ground sometimes.

The one I got was eaten to the nubb, but I know it will come back. I will always trade for the MayPop because I never have enough of it.
I have The native May Pop vine. So far I just pull them up and toss them. From now on I will get a shovel and try to dig some of the root up and pot them for anyone who wants it.

I vote giving them away, too. There's a house around the corner from me where the fence is covered, probably has been for thirty years. Any time someone stops to ask what the flower is, or compliment it, the guy whips out a little pot with a starter vine. So over the years, all these people he's been open-handed with drop back by with plants or veggies or such. He's been joking lately that he's going to have to start giving those things away, because he getting more than he can possibly use.
real, I love that story. I just tapped in to this thread because, I have two kinds, pretty much evergreen but with very different leaves. Only one bloomed last year but both are coming up now. Mine are in pots on my deck. Here is the one that always comes up and blooms...I'm in Austin too.
I think this is another shot. Usually they bloom by now.
Ok I love the large maypop that I planted last fall but the babies are everywhere! I am not liking what this vine is doing. I got another (thought the one from fall died) and it will be dug up and put into a pot.

The maypop is popping up all over the bed its in and many feet away in the lawn, it has to go...they just keep coming back up!

i have them every where too and they kept growing into my air conditioner! i keep pulling them out but i have left some to continue trailing through my holly bushes and i took some small plants and put them in pots with trellis to climb --i saw someone posted beutiful trellis full of the vine in a pot and it was beautiful--i think they had it indoors
Yes, I can take some passion flower vines for the greenhouse sale if they are the native kind.
Is there an exchange of plants among us in the fall? I would love some passion vine also. I have two I planted this spring and both ore stripped to the ground.

It will be announced with plenty of time, and there is a lot of trading going on online previous to the swap, then we meet on the agreed date, meet each other, exchange plants, eat and have a lot of fun.

and by the time the fall round up comes you will be bringing passion vines to trade! they are beautiful but they do take off--- i am trying a few in containers since pretty pics on the vines thread --we saw one at an upscale nursery last weekend and i had to stop my friend from buying it--she is usually sharing plants with me so i was excited i had one she wanted!
After seeing how invasive this plant is, I think I'm going to cancel my order! LOL So Cheryl, don't worry about saving one for me.
i feel bad if i am the one to stop you--it is pretty--and it does come out of ground easily--not like trying to pull ivy out!
a vine that is growing in my yard now has huge wide leaves (almost round) but no flowers --i need to see what morning glories look like--maybe it is a morning glory

i found the morning glory pics in picture file and it is a morning glory--just don't know yet which one since no flowers yet--is that unusual? no flowers but a big healthy fast growing vine? or do they just come later?
i posted somewhere about visiting my daughter in virginia and she had a big flowering plant in her corner--she said she didn't know what it was and that she just bought it in a little pot a year or so ago and it just kept growing and blooming--she is not domestic/she is not home much so she said she kind of neglects it and it just is happy as can be--i am growing a few of the stems and found out it is a cane begonia with spotted leaves
but the strang thing is a few days ago a begonia started growing in my yard with those same big spotted leaves--i guess i might have gotten it from the round up? i am pretty excited since the ones i am growing from daughters plant is not doing quite as well as i would have hoped!
I sent a cane begonia to a RU last year, but not sure who I sent it to.
And I do hope someone will save me a maypop for the RU, please? Mine has struggled and now, after the sprinkler guys, it's gone completely.
PlanoLinda, that is so nice of you! Do you have the native flower (yellow maybe) or the blue one? I know there are lots of different kinds. I think the two i grew are blue but we never got to see a flower because the cats ate it up so quick! ;-)

the Passion vine I have is probably a cultivar as I found it at Blue Moon Nursery near Edom, and it is as invasive as any Texas vine. I can;t remember if it had a special ame. Like you, I just mow over or dig 'em up and give to friends, neighbors, family and actually made 2 trades with them. So many folks responded that I wish I had potted them all and no one would have been dissapointed.
Once long time ago, I spotted a native speciman but by the time I got around to putting a sharp-shooter in the trunk, the City street crew had dug up that whole corner to widen the street. I submitted a pic to DG of the one I have.

You know lots of people on this site have maypop and seem to love it. I know the butterflies use them but mine have not yet been gifted with eggs of any type. Are there PV's that are not so likely to spread in TX?

Josephine, thanks for saving me a pv. I think that I should probably let someone else have your redbud. The things that were behind that pear tree are growing much better, since they can see the sun, so probably best to let them grow unimpeded for now.

Cheryl, I think all Passion vines sucker, but if you need caterpillars to tame yours down I can give you some to get you started.
I got caterpillars from someone the first year and that worked...had them visit ever since.

You may have 'incense' Linda. That one is a large leaved and fast grower...non-native. I love it for the blooms and the smell it offers. I planted it out front and enjoyed it one year then the GFs found it and it is bare vine now.

I thought I lost it the first winter but before long it started putting up runners four and five foot away, but still can't see anything the cats keep it eat back.
I try to plant things that will serve as a food source but for me, maypop is already a problem. It is sending up new plants over 10 feet away. I have found about 2 dozen and the original plant was put in last fall. As far as I am concerned, any insect that would eat those things is welcome. I just don't want a flower bed or yard full of it, so to speak. It's putting out sporadic flowers that are way up at the top and so I don't see them all that much.
