welcoming fellow texans

Plano, TX

Josephine and Sheila have inspired me with their Texas birthday updates. I think it is a fun idea that we all appreciate. Thanks for helping us keep up with the birthdays ladies.

I try to greet new Texas members with a quick dmail--"welcome fellow Texan" and thought I would remind everyone on our Texas thread when we do have a new Texan. You can join me in welcoming them in the manner Texans are so good at!

Sheila_FW " Some may never get on the forums but they do get dmails."

I guess that would be true and so I will post the reminder and leave it up to everyone how you welcome new members--on this thread or by dmail.

Welcome aboard!

This is a fantastic group and very welcoming. All new Texas Dg'ers will be received with open arms...so to speak. I attended a Round-up plant swap in the spring in DFW area and met some wonderful gardeners!

Just wanted to let Josephine and Sheila know that even though I don't have any plants to swap for fall (My house was built in a pasture and haven't spent much $$ on landscaping yet) I'm hoping to have some hypertufa pots to swap. Been experimenting for a month with different recipes. Getting pretty good at it :) Haven't tackled a full size trough but that's coming up next!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello PlayNNtheDirt, good to hear from you!!!
We are looking forward to seeing you again at the fall swap, and to cooler temperatures too.

Hypertufa sounds like a fun hobby and just think, you will have your pots the way you want them.
I am looking for a very shallow trough, about 4 inches deep or less, about the depth of a pot saucer, but in an oval shape, and to look like stone, but be light weight.
Am I crazy? or is this possible?

I want it for my front yard for the birds to have fun, but I don't want a regular bird bath.
What do you think of this idea?
Josephine.

Plano, TX

josephine i think you need to take up hypertufa! or maybe design it!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I may need to look into that Linda.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Will hypertufa hold water?
But....I would love a hypertufa pot from you in trade PND, and we missed you this spring too.

PlanoLinda gave me a mold for the head pots and I need to start experimenting with it.

Arlington, TX

Planolinda...do you make or sell the "head" pots? I am wanting one for the euphorbia I got at the arlington RU.
Cheryl

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Cheryl, make a play date with me and we can experiment together! LOL!

Arlington, TX

LOL is it a mold for ceramics or could you use other materials?

Karen, Mt.Pleasant, TX

Josephine, I would be pleased to make the pot you have in mind. I love working with 'tufa! Vicki, the friend I brought with me to the roundup has a very unique oval shaped bowl we used as a mold. Tufa is very easy to do, can look very pebbly, especially if you blend in aquarium gravel like my newest creation and made to any depth you desire. It IS very lightweight when fully cured. I just checked some of my earliest projects yesterday and was amazed as to how much weight they have lost in only a month!!

But I don't want to stifle YOUR creativity! You should try it, there is a lot of info in the forums here and all over the 'net.

Sheila, hypertufa will hold water if sealed properly. There is a water garden made from it in the forums by greyma, if I remember correctly.

Josephine and Sheila, I had planned for it to be a surprise but I intended to let ya'll take your pick from the several pots I intend to bring with me to the fall roundup. Both of you made me feel so welcome and were very encouraging to me as newbie so I would love to do something for you both :) But I am willing to take "orders". Josephine you mentioned, 4"deep but how big around did you have in mind. I'm guessing you are planning to use it for a splash pool for the birdies?

Karen, Mt.Pleasant, TX

Oh and I like the abbreviation for my user name from Sheila, PND. I didn't think about how long it would be for everyone to write it out when addressing me. Just tried to think of something clever, LOL. But Karen works too!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Karen, you are such a sweetheart to offer, but as you said, it is probably something I should try, it is hard to interpret what someone else has in mind.
Yes, I do want it to be a splash pool for the birds, but I really need to think about it.
I would surely love one of your pots, looking forward to it.
Josephine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey on here people will always abreviate when they can! LOL!

Arlington, TX

I am up to playing in the...hypertufa. Can the head mold be use for those?
Cheryl

Plano, TX

sheila--funny you should mention the pot head! i was thinking of giving you a little nudge to try it--

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I wouldn't think so Cheryl, but what do you think Linda?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

When I see the words "pot head" I don't think hypertufa or anything a plant goes in. I'm just sayin'!

Arlington, TX

Does head pot sound any better? LOL

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

This isn't California! I was thinking about hypertufa, but I have to figure out how to handle over 90 lbs of portland cement. Has anyone one seen it sold in smaller quantities?

Plano, TX

i know--every time i type pot head i have to laugh!----ok--head pot it is--and no i don't think hypertufa would work at all for the molds
i used something called quick set or a name very much like that--smaller bags and just add water till nice and thick and pour into the mold---then i even bought grout colorant powder and used that to change the color of the cement --and sometimes i just made the heads-no pots

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Can someone post a picture of one of these things?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is the site for all of them. The one I have is the greek god.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about the cement weight. I will have to ask the husband or call Lowe's to find out about smaller bags. I can't see myself hauling 90 pounds either these days. 50 is about my limit. Definately going to try making some troughs after I get some other things cleaned and cleared up. Do you think they would be good for cactus?

Don't know if you guys remember seeing this on the photo contest or not but it won a spot on the calendar in 08.

Yes, that is a wonderful picture and certainly deserved to win a prize.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That's what I though ya'll were talking about, but wanted to be sure. I certainly do remember that photo; it's gorgeous!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I wish I had a mold for the bust, but the head pot will be neat too. But I am so busy lately it seems. I don't know when I had time to work. Guess back then I managed my off time much better....I sometimes sit around all day now, don't get anything done, and wonder why I am so tired.

Arlington, TX

I think its the pollutants from the gas wells....

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

ROFLOL!!! Where is that emotions icon.....
Well I could blame it on almost anything, but just "put-off-itus" is my problem.

Arlington, TX

Well I was only half joking. I can see 2 wells from my house and I am very worried about a completely unregulated drilling process polluting the environment I live in. But, I too just need to get up and go, to do some work that is.
