Will japanese maple seeds sprout

Marthasville, MO

While shopping for a japanese maple I can afford, I noticed some of these trees were producing seeds similar to what you see on our native maples. We always called them whirligigs. Ok what will they produce if I were to sprout some of these seeds?

Calypso, I have 4 different ones that have started this way, I was going to post the pictures of them for you but the battery is low in my camera so will have to do it later if you are interested.

One is an Acer Palmatum I started on the 3rd of Feb. It germinated in late April I think. Rough guess.

two a friend sent me of Bloodgood. They are 2 that germinated so close together I twisted them around each other.

The 4th is one the same friend sent me and it appears to be a JPM but not sure what. Will have to ask him.

I planted quite a few seeds tho (included the wings) and only one came up for me. I wintersowed them. Don't know if I planted them right. I have seen little maple trees sprout under big trees a lot and I doubt they are planted just so. LOL Let me know if you want to see the pictures.

I think JM's need some special treatment to get them to germinate--double stratification or something like that. If you leave them alone outdoors then I think that means in the 2nd year they'd sprout (after they've been through two winters). If you want to force them to sprout you can probably fake that effect with some time in the fridge, then warm them up, then chill again (if you google JM seed germination you should find better instructions). The JM named cultivars won't come true from seed though--in some cases you may end up with something that looks somewhat close to the parent but it's not a guarantee.

Well, I suppose I could post the pictures. Maybe I will.

OK, this is an Acer Palmatum that I got the seed off of the piggy swap and planted the 3rd of Feb. It germinated sometime in April.

Wish I could post them altogether.

Ok, here are the 2 Bloodgoods which I described above.

And here is the last one I listed.

ecraine 3 is probably right. These are not grafted. However, they are just like the seedlings sold by vendors as such.

Nothing wrong with JM seedlings--just wanted to point out that they won't necessarily look like the parent so if you're looking to pick up seeds instead of buying a particular tree that you like, you may end up not getting what you were hoping for.

Well that is true about any hybrid plant that you use seeds from. When you look at JMs at nurseries, mainly that grow and sell just those, they will have grafted trees and also seedlings. What they are selling as seedlings are the same as what you are talking about here.

Thanks for all your replies. I remember now that the tree I got the seeds from is the bloodgood variety. I have about 15 seeds and I have been soaking them for a few days. If they don't germinate I will give them the cold treatment next time . I plan to cut off the wings. calypso6973

Calypso did your seeds germinate yet?

I have a japanese red maple tree, I think it's around 3 or 4 years old. What I want to know is how old does it have to be before I get any seeds from it?
