Is this a grub?

Are grubs good to have or do they eat plant roots? Thank you!

PS
Ant went home and says, "I caught a grub and it was THIS big!! No really. I swear!" LOL!

What you have there is almost looks like a type of tomato worm...where did you find this thing?

Coral Springs, FL(Zone 10b)

I found it in the flower bed when I was pulling weeds. It was in the dirt that I shook off.

It could possibly be one of the moths caterpillar. My daughter found a green one with marking like that, I think it was a White Stripped Moth, or something like it.

Here goes: Check this out!

This looks like an actual caterpillar rather than a pupated one. I don't think it is a grub, although grubs are immature forms of beetles and various insects too.

As far as the White-lined Sphinx, I'm not so sure about that, but it does look like a member of the Sphingidae family.

Ditto, a member of the Sphinx moths. And yes, caterpillar form just about to pupate when it wanders off the hostplant to go and hide in the ground to 'hypernate' I think.

Try this genera: Spodoptera http://bugguide.net/node/view/5935/bgimage

And Noctua: http://bugguide.net/node/view/323758/bgimage

Both of these are very similar to your caterpillar.

Hey that looks like my guy. The first one more than the second one I think. Well after his photo session I put him back in the flower bed where I found him. I did not cover him though. Maybe I should have. Oops!! Thank you!
